first rant

I’ve just finished my second year at University College Cork; I’m relieved to have handed-in my project and have the summer to myself. I started the course because I wanted to set up a not-for-profit organisation to restore derelict houses in Ireland as social housing (a bit like Hearth Housing does in Northern Ireland).

In the meantime, the project I’ve just finished was about the sustainability of Bed and Breakfast enterprises in rural Ireland. It showed that local products (especially food) are important to B&Bs because guests like them. There are many local producers in Ireland, selling at farmers’ markets, etc, and many B&Bs who would like to use local produce. So, a way of bringing the two together, to create local networks of buyers and sellers of local produce could be really useful, and I’m thinking of setting something up. Fuchsia Brands is doing a similar thing on a grander scale (distribution, criteria for producers, etc). Various organisations in the United Kingdom are also doing similar things, eg the Local Food Alliance, and Source (Exmoor and Quantocks Local Food Ltd). I intend to post the completed project here soon, it will also be made available to the participating B&Bs who requested a copy of the results.

Will be back with more soon.
